HONORS ACHIEVERS

Verona, NY – With the elegant atmosphere of the Turning Stone’s Shenandoah Room as the backdrop, the ISMA-Wirtgen group gathered to honor the 2006 season achievers on November 11. And, it was Vic Miller, Chris Perley and crew who where the center of attention after their record-breaking season.

The Miller-Perley crew with second driver Bentley Warren picked up eleven wins during the ISMA-Wirtgen super season, an unprecedented record that even Team Dunigan didn’t approach in its heyday. Perley and Miller were honored as ISMA Driver and Car Owner of the Year. The crew was voted Race Threads Crew of the Year. Chris Perley was honored with the ISMA Achievement award. Perley was also named the Gater Racing News Fans Choice Most Popular Driver for the sixth straight year. For the whole group it was definitely a year to remember.

The Spaulding foundation – they didn’t know me from anybody – sent me a check that got me through and then ISMA came across to make sure I was taken care of. Thanks to all who helped. If you see the Spaulding Foundation out there raising money, give them some help. I just wanted to let everyone know that I appreciated it very much.”

A tentative 17-race schedule was unveiled for 2007, which will take the ISMA organization from Maine to Canada to Michigan and back.

Master of Ceremonies Bob Gangwer, a long-time race fan from Indiana, closed out the ceremonies with a note that he was honored to be allowed to begin ISMA announcing duties in 2006.

WIRTGEN GROUP EXPANDS NORTHEAST
OPEN WHEEL SPONSORSHIP THROUGH ISMA

Oswego, NY Stuart Murray, President of the Wirtgen Group, Nashville, Tennessee has announced today the expansion of Wirtgen's Northeast Open Wheel Program that currently includes NEMA and USAC Northeast Ford Focus division to now include the highly competitive ISMA supermodifieds.

Murray stated that this move now completes his desire to support all the stepping-stones for open wheel driver development in the Northeast. "The USAC Ford Focus is a great place for the 16-year olds to grow into after the go-kart, micro midget, quarter midget and 600 cc cars. I have always felt there was a void in young driver development for the 14-18 year olds and perhaps a lot of good talent was drifting away from motor sports during these early teenage years because of a missing venue.

"The next step out of USAC Ford Focus that is much more competitive, but still affordable, is the 52-year old Northeastern Midget Association (NEMA). This group of racers allow the young guns to really get the feel of speed and handling of a well constructed wing type open wheel midget and positions these New England drivers to take their careers to the next level be in Busch East, USAC Sprints, NASCAR Modifieds or the very popular East Coast Open Wheel Supermodifieds.

"If you look a the current driver listing in the Northeast supermodified ranks, it is the "who's who" of fast, highly competitive open wheel racers. Young guns like Kyle Carpenter, Bobby Santos mixed in with the likes of Scotty Martel, Mike Lichty, Liquid Lou Cicconi, Joey Payne, Nokie Fornoro and then bringing in the even more experienced pros like Chris Perley, Dave McKnight, Joe Gosek, Greg Furlong, Randy Ritskes, Mike Ordway, coupled with "Father Time" Mr. Bentley Warren it just doesnąt get any better!"

Wirtgen's business is designing, manufacturing, and distributing the world's most advanced highway milling machines, asphalt pavers, and asphalt-dirt compactors. "Our biggest market areas are east of the Mississippi River and the Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and New England states are huge
markets," continued Murray. "Wirtgen is happy to support the lightning fast, highly competitive, and professional group the International Super Modified Association. Visit us at www.wirtgenamerica.com."

The ISMA group, in turn, couldn't be more proud to be associated with such a company with such a strong support of open wheel racing.

Join Wirtgen and ISMA at the season opener at Oswego Speedway on Sunday, May 7. Race time is 1 pm. RoC modifieds and Limited Supers take to the track with the ISMA winged supers that day.

LANE RACE TEAM - YOUNG DOUBLE TROUBLE
- HEADING FOR OSWEGO’S ISMA OPENER

Oswego, NY – When the ISMA –Wirtgen contingent hits the pavement on Sunday afternoon May 7 at Oswego Speedway, two of the most talented youthful drivers around will be looking for another ISMA win. Kyle Carpenter, 22, has one ISMA win to his credit and Bobby Santos III, 20, has two career ISMA wins under his belt. Both are undoubtedly headed for more as they pilot the Howie Lane-owned 9 and 97 supers as teammates throughout 2006.

Bobby Santos III, of Franklin, Mass. drove the Lane car back in 2003 and garnered his first win at Oxford Plains, Maine, in his first full year of ISMA competition. He came back the next year with a giant win at the Oswego Super Nationals on Saturday and a second place in the prestigious International Classic the next day. In 2005, Bob headed off to compete in the USAC sprints and midgets which did not leave much time for ISMA competition. Carpenter joined the Lane team last season and he too got his first in his initial year at Sandusky Speedway in July. He earned an 11th in points in the ISMA final standings and backed that up with an 11th in NEMA points. Both drivers are young. Both are very talented, but each has a little different racing career outlook.

Kyle “The Smile” has reiterated his “staying-put” declaration on numerous occasions. “I’m not using the supers to get to anywhere else,” Kyle added. “I don’t want to go to Cup, or Busch East, or anything like that. This is what I want to do. The super has big tires, the motor is 1/2 way outside the car and we run with a big wing on it. It’s an awesome machine. The supermodified is the ultimate racecar. This is
where I want to be. I’m really happy here. I get to race with Bentley Warren, Mike Ordway, Chris Perley and everyone else. Chris is my teammate again in the NEMA midget, I learn a lot by watching him. This
is fun.”

Carpenter, who lists his occupation as a mechanic-fabricator-racecar driver, is appropriately nicknamed Kyle “The Smile”, as there is usually a big grin coming from the Gloucester, Mass. resident. “We don’t get worked up about a lot of things,” he before last year’s Oswego race. “We don’t get real serious. There are times to go to work, but we go to the racetrack and have fun. We do our best, and
give it everything we can. Our attitude is one where we’re there to have fun with it, and go as fast as we can.”

Santos, on the other hand, has tried just about everything. The former ISMA co-rookie of the year, who comes from a racing family, appears to have some upward mobility. At age 20, he’s a 16-year race veteran who has driven a quarter midget to a national championship, piloted a NEMA midget, a Modified, a Sunoco Modified, a USAC sprint and a USAC midget, among others, along the wheeling of the powerful supermodifieds. This season “I’ll be running as many ISMA races as I can - more than in
2005,” said Santos. “I will still be running the USAC sprints and midgets also.”

Looking back at the Oswego Super Nationals win in 2004, Bobby Santos III, as a teenager, added his name to a long list of wily and older veterans such as Ritskes, Abold, Warren, Wood, Perley, McKnight, John and Joey Payne, Allbritain, Martel, Jedrzejek, Furlong and Fornoro, who have graced victory lane in a winged supermodified at Oswego. A remarkable feat to say the least!

The Lane Racing numbers 9 and 97 have some loyal sponsors backing them along with their talented drivers. The team is sponsored by Dr. Mom Says School is Cool, Reader Electric, Marshall Landscaping and Essex Seafood. Howie Lane is the team owner as well as serving as ISMA President.

While one may go on someday and one may stay around for a long time, add these two young talents to the long list of worthy supermodified opponents, and the 2006 ISMA season opener should be as exciting as ever. There are a couple other early 20-somethings like Mike Lichty and Brandon Bellinger who will be fighting the double trouble Lane team for top spots. The Sunday, May 7 show at Oswego is ISMA’s first race date and the Race of Champions modifieds and Oswego’s limited supers will join them. Racing begins at 1pm that afternoon at the Big O. “LIQUID” LOU CICCONI WOULD LIKE TO REPEAT AS ISMA OPENER VICTOR AND CONTINUE ON FROM THERE TO MORE VICTORY LANES

Oswego, NY – When ISMA, and new sponsor Wirtgen, hit the asphalt for their season opener at Oswego Speedway on May 7, Lou Cicconi would like to be in the winner’s circle. He won the opener last season at Waterford, but that one checkered was the only “W” in his column for last year. He struggled after that and finished a rather dismal season with only five top-ten finishes including the win. This year, with the help of a new crew chief, Brian Allegresso and some of the former Dunigan crew, he might just do it.

Cicconi’s illustrious racing career includes other open wheel divisions and lists many accomplishments throughout his midget career – indoors and out. The body shop owner from Aston, PA is in his 31st year of racing and in his 9th as an ISMA pilot. He has seven ISMA wins to his credit to date and hopes for more. He’s used to winning.

“It only goes without saying that you want to do better each season, Every driver wants that.” said Lou. “Especially if you had a year like I had last year. I won the opener last year and I want to do it again of course. Hopefully the car will be better with Brian working on it.”

Lou is getting one of his old 75’s revamped by Brian Allegresso, formerly of the ultra successful Dunigan race team. When Paul Dunigan Jr. decided to sit out the 2006 season, Allegresso was asked by Cicconi to help him out. Brian now works out of the Butch Valley shop and is concentrating on making the 75 a new force to reckon with.

“Lou actually had five of those Drinan-designed cars. He sold one to the Brett and Butch Roundy late last season.” said Brian. “Lou started several seasons with a new one and each time won a few then had the car go away. I have the newest one and one that was basically a frame and I’m trying to piece together a competitive car for Lou.”

Allegresso picked up the Cicconi equipment the first of January and on the second, Doc Hathaway came
to help. “Doc was right there analyzing the rear of the car and then we began changing it from the tubing to the frame,” said Brian. “ A month later, Doc came back and we began the front of the car. We were basically changing the way things were hooked up. I’ve been working seven days a week, 12 hours a day and it’s still going to be close to get it done. The steering was terrible on that car. I put in all Sweet stuff and I’m hoping that Lou can drive it faster now that he can steer it.”

Allegresso has been working on Cicconi’s car from the Butch Valley shop and he says, “It helps tremendously because I have a some talented help here. I needed that. Many of the former Dunigan crew are helping too and all my sponsors came with me. Lou’s been great to work for despite a little “language barrier”, laughed Allegresso. “My game plan is to finish Lou’s car and make it work right and then build two cars of my own eventually. Those will be redesigned cars. I’ve always built a new car adding the goods from the past and eliminating the bads. But, I’ll make sure Lou’s car is right first.”

The car Lou Cicconi drives onto the Oswego Speedway in May might not look much different but it certainly should be a new car underneath. Brian Allegresso has been working on successful cars for a long time and Lou Cicconi has been driving to the front for a long time. The duo should easily be fast and finishing near or at the top.

The Oswego Speedway opener for ISMA on May 7 is rather unusual. Not only have they not run at the famed 5/8th’s for their initial race of the season, they have run only one other race there without the non-winged supers in attendance somewhere along the way as in Classic weekend. The 1pm-starting show lists the ISMA group headlining the Parts Plus/Gater Racing News event along with the RoC Modified Tour and the Limited Supers. The 56th season for the non-winged supers opens the following Saturday on May 13 with the Limited Supers and Ford Focus groups joining the “Oswego” supers.

ISMA-WIRTGEN SUPERS FIRST UP AT OSWEGO SPEEDWAY THIS YEAR, JOINING ROC
MODS AND LIMITED SUPERS

Oswego, NY - After a quiet and long off-season the Oswego Speedway will roar to life one week earlier than normal in 2006. Sunday afternoon, May 7th has been set for the first ever “Open Wheel Extravaganza” sponsored by Gater Racing News and Parts Plus. The racing card is full of a little bit of everything for the open wheel-racing enthusiast. This will be the Wirtgen International SuperModified Association’s first race of the year and the first time also for them to be the opening act at Oswego.

The ISMA-Wirtgen group will run a 50 lap main and many entrants are expected to dust off the frost of winter and head for the Big O. The winged supermodifieds have been running under the ISMA sanction at Oswego since 1992 when Randy Ritskes made history by borrowing a car to take home the first-ever ISMA feature. Pat Abold dominated the next two years at Oswego. In 1995 three winged shows took place with the winged warriors being added to Memorial Day activities as well as Classic weekend. It was also in that year that a fall race was held when ISMA rented the speedway. Russ Wood, Chris Perley and Dave McKnight took the flags that year and for Perley it was the first of three $8,000 paydays at the Oswego Super Nationals. Those who had not heard of the Rowley Rocket before sat up and took notice.

In 1996 Russ Wood won in the spring and Perley again at Classic time. ISMA appeared only once at the famed five-eighths mile in 1997 and 1998 with Perley taking his last Super Nationals in 97 and Joey Payne grabbing his first Oswego win in 1998. In 1999, Randy Ritskes picked up number two in the winged action while veteran Gary Allbritain came home the Super Nationals victor.

Dave McKnight began a sweep of his own in 2000 when he would pick up that Shampine Memorial event and go on to take the Super Nationals and repeated both wins in 2001. That four-in-a-row win streak is untouched in the record books.

Scotty Martel broke McKnight’s streak by winning the 2002 Shampine Memorial in May while Ohian Timmy Jedrzejek claimed a career-first at Oswego in the Super Nationals. 2003’s event was washed out three times and finally cancelled.

In 2004 Johnny Payne joined his brother Joey as a first-time ISMA winner making the Paynes the only brother team to win ISMA Oswego events. Young Bobby Santos had a spectacular Classic weekend that year winning the Super Nationals and finishing second in the International Classic in another car.

In 2005, Nokie Fornoro brought the Soule Racing 32 home to victory lane. With many of these winners still active and gunning for more Oswego gold, the Sunday, May 7th event should be no less exciting than in the past.

Added to this year’s ISMA-Wirtgen roster are some really familiar names to Oswego fans in Brandon Bellinger, Bob Magner, Dave Trytek, Jeff Holbrook, Bob Bond, John Torrese, Ray Graham, Jr., Travis Bartlett, Kelly Miller, Mike Hooper, Jerry Curran, Joey Hawksby Jr., and Greg Furlong. This is all in addition to the ISMA regulars such as Perley, Fornoro, Bentley Warren, Dave McKnight, Mike Lichty and a host of others who portend to make this one excellent race day.

In combination with the ISMA cars who will be making their first of two trips to Oswego, the Race of Champions asphalt Modified Tour will make their first of five trips to the Oswego Speedway and compete in a 75 lap feature. The PathFinder Bank Limited Supermodifieds will kick off their 2006 “Shell Oil - Power Ade - Hoosier Tire” points season at the Oswego Speedway with a 25-lap feature. Oswego’s first regular night of racing takes place on May 13.

The weekend kicks off with an Open Practice session on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 5:00, which offers free grandstand admission for the fans. On Sunday the pits open at 9:00, the grandstands open at 11:00 and the first green flag of the 2006 season is set to be dropped at 1:00.

ISMA SUPERMODIFIEDS
RETURN TO DELAWARE SPEEDWAY
MUCH TO DELIGHT OF SAMMUT FAMILY

550-CONIAMWARRENDELAWARE.jpg (32871 bytes)

Two of supermodified's legends - Warren Coniam and Bentley Warren battle it out at
Delaware Speedway in 1984. Coniam has long since retired and follows his son Ryan, fast
becoming a rising star himself. Warren, on the other hand, can pop up anytime, anywhere
and is still a force to reckon with.   Jim Feeney Photos

Oswego, NY - The ISMA (International Super Modified Association) Super Modifieds will be returning to Delaware Speedway, near London, Ontario in 2006 for the first time in over 20 years. The event, set for Friday, September 29, 2006, will serve as a homecoming of sorts for ISMA star Mark Sammut.

Quoting from a recent Delaware Speedway release, London resident Mark Sammut had this to say about ISMAs return, "Everybody's pumped right up, us included. It'll be great to have a show at home. Last time I ran at Delaware would have been in 1996 when I won with the Can-Am Midgets. Hopefully we can do that again and win one for the home crowd."

The last year for ISMA at Delaware was in 1984 and it was a year filled with Canadian competition. The ISMA schedule included six trips to Flamboro and one to Delaware, a string that dominated the 13-race slate that year. Taking home the checkereds up north of the border that season were Dave Shullick Sr., Bentley Warren (2 wins), Warren Coniam (2 wins) and Steve Gioia Jr. (all at Flamboro) and Ohio's Gary Allbritain at Delaware.

Prior to that 1984 final at Delaware, three other shows were held. In 1976, Steve Gioia Jr. was the first-ever ISMA winner at that half mile while in July, Bentley Warren took home the win. The ISMA groups returned in 1983 with dirt-modified-turned supermodified star Mike McLaughlin winning the June 4 event. McLaughlin would later head south to pursue a NASCAR career.

The return of ISMA to Delaware Speedway this year will mark the tracks 55th anniversary. At one time, Super Modifieds used to run weekly at Delaware, which is partly how the Mark Sammut and his dad Tony got involved.

"I had a Super for one season, and then went to a Late Model in the late 60s," said Tony. "I wasn't very successful so I packed it in. Previously I had worked with John Norton's Super Modified running Delaware, Flamboro and Nilestown. After I quit that I went to work with Harvey Lennox who ran the London Machinery Car."

Following in the footsteps of his dad, Mark Sammut grew up around racing, specifically Supermodifieds. "When he was a few months old, we used to run Oswego and Delaware and we took him along," Tony said.

Mark, who began his racing career with go-karts and Can-Am Midgets before progressing to the supers, will be entering his eighth season racing with ISMA. Last season Sammut cracked the competitive ISMA point standings with a tenth place with a near-miss first win coming at Cayuga Speedway.

"We couldn't be more excited about being a part of the ISMA schedule," said Delaware Speedway General Manager Kevin Bulmer. "All through last year, we got asked by fans, sponsors and racers about when and if ISMA was coming back. We were asked about ISMA more than any of the other touring groups combined, and I can't thank Mark and Tony Sammut enough for helping us get that date."

The Sept. 29 Delaware event is just one of four big shows for ISMA this season, starting at Oswego on Sept. 2, then to Star on Sept. 9, a return to Berlin Raceway after a several year hiatus, follows Delaware on Sept. 30 to cap off the month.

ISMA DRIVERS AND CAR OWNERS
MOVE ON TOWARD 2006 SEASON

Oswego, NY - "All those things that don't change come what may" goes the old song and it aptly describes the upcoming race season. Over the off-season, while some things have changed  there is one thing that hasn't- it's the fact that a new season looms on the horizon. And so it goes for the Helping Hands of America/Wirtgen ISMA organization. In the off-season the perennial powerhouse Dunigan Team decided it was time to park their cars for now, but new supermodified cars have joined
the fold to fill that void. Although Team Dunigan, with its many achievements and accomplishments over the years, will never be replaced, there are many old and new faces preparing for the new season
with great anticipation and a chance to showcase their capabilities to the fans.

But, perhaps, ISMA hasn't seen the last of the potent Dunigan-Allegresso-built supers despite the chatroom chatter. Paul Dunigan Jr., from his Tower News business in Lowell, Mass., said recently, "Nothing is going anywhere. It's staying right where it is for right now. I might pull the cars out eventually, but we're going to see how things go right now. I'm enjoying everything presently with no
racing headaches.

"We're getting some things done at the garage," Paul Jr. continued,   "Working on some of the other cars we haven't touched in fifteen years. Dad had a bunch of different cars and I did too. We're starting to work on some of those.   Mom and I bought a condo at the beach and I got there once last year the way the race schedule ran, with the rainouts and rescheduling. I want more time at the beach this summer. After that we'll see how it goes."

And, with this year's departure of the Dunigan supers, six-time ISMA champion Russ Wood and ISMA All-Time feature winner, is without a ride at this date. "As of right now I have nothing in the works," said Russ from Woody's in Pelham, NH. "But then I haven't pursued anything either. I'm not a retired old driver yet. I'd take a good ride, but I've been spoiled. Someday, sometime, I'd like to race with Brian (Allegresso) again. I have a daughter and a son racing go-karts now and I'll be happy to go racing with them for now."

2005 ISMA Champion Pat Abold is in the same boat as Wood. Pat, after winning the 2005 championship, is car-less. But, he too, has an ambitious son who has a strong USAC Ford Focus schedule coming up in
2006. Abold will not be devoid of racing, but assuredly would jump in the seat of a quality super ride if it were offered.

And, there is a lot of activity in the returnee camp. Two-time ISMA champion Chris Perley indicated from Rowley, Mass. that it's the "same old-same old" for him. "Why change anything?" said Perley, "I just have to make up six points (the amount he finished behind Abold for the championship in 2005). We've got the car pulled apart and the usual maintenance is being done. It is going to seem strange not to race against Russ and Pat this year, but there certainly is enough competition out there. I'll be looking for Nokie to be tough and of course Louie, who now has Brian Allegresso preparing his car. At any given time last year there were a bunch of guys who could win races. It won't be easy."

In the Howie Lane camp, young lions Kyle Carpenter and Bobby Santos will be back in the seats of the 97 and 9 supermodifieds. Veteran Scotty Martel, who ran for Lane last year, has announced that he will
once again campaign a full ISMA season and is busy readying his family-owned number 14 car.

Oswegogonian Jeff Holbrook has signed up for two ISMA franchises for the 2006 season. Car owner Holbrook competed on occasion during t he 2005 season on the ISMA trail with another young lion Bob Magner and veteran Dave Trytek piloting the potent Holbrook cars. Several new Ohio teams have also joined the group.

With former Dunigan wrench Brian Allegresso now preparing a supermodified for Lou Cicconi Jr., a powerful team should immediately evolve. Cicconi and Joey Payne spent the off-season battling at the
Atlantic City Indoor show in January. The famous duo raced a thrilling side-by-side main event for many laps until Payne eventually blew a motor. Cicconi went on to park in victory lane while Payne stopped in the winner's circle to congratulate his old friend. These two have also thrilled the crowds more than once with some intense battles in their larger supermodified machines.

2004 ISMA Rookie of the Year Mike Lichty also made his first-ever Boardwalk appearance in a TQ midget.  He finished fourth in the A-Main and he's already looking forward to dividing his time between ISMA and the USAC Silver Crown circuit this year. He'll be teaming once again with 2001 ISMA champion Dave McKnight when the ISMA season opens at Oswego Speedway on Sunday afternoon, May 7th.

And, along with many other competitors like Joe Petro, Justin Belfiore, Ricky Wentworth, Mark Sammut, Randy Ritskes, and more, the ISMA wheels are rolling toward another exciting ISMA season. A few dates on the schedule are still being worked on at this early date, so look for future announcements.

CARDS to JOHN GAMBUTI
On a side note, Jon Gambuti of Point Pleasant, NJ took a hard hit at Atlantic City. His recovery may be lengthy after surgery for a fractured cervical vertebra and lower lumbar fracture. Gambuti piloted the Jack Carfello-owned number 15 supermodified last season with ISMA. Cards may be sent to 601 Mistletoe Ave., Apt. 15, Point Pleasant, NJ 08742.

A NOTE FROM DON BAKER OF LUCAS OIL PRODUCTS

Mississauga, ON 3/30/06:  The recent announcement by Lucas Oil that it could not sponsor the ISMA organization and team PATCO this season was met with great surprise and perhaps no one was more surprised that Don Baker of the Canadian office, who was the main man behind getting the sponsorship. While the paperwork had been submitted in the late fall of 2005, it was only in the last few weeks that everyone found out that ISMA had been checked off as a no-go in the budget.

Speaking from his Mississauga office recently Don indicated that all financial requests over $2500 must now go to the California headquarters. "I just want everyone to know that I am also disappointed about not being able to renew the sponsorship. I enjoyed our association with ISMA and the supermodifieds. I didnąt get to a whole lot of races, but I tried. When my wife and I did make the show, we certainly enjoyed ourselves. But this year, due to budget cuts, the head office decided to cut out some of the sponsorships."

Don said he will certainly keep ISMA in mind for the future and wished everyone the best of luck in their racing in 2006.
